A man quits his job to care for his dying grandmother, motivated by his fortune. This is actually the film debut of Usa Semkhum, a 78-year-old housewife, who plays the role of Grandma Meng Ju. You just need authenticity without any artifice
Esteemed film critic Roger Ebert once declared that movies are massive empathy-generating machines, a statement I’ve embraced wholeheartedly, and there’s no better demonstration of this phenomenon than How to Make a Million Before Your Grandma Dies. The emotional rollercoaster and rollercoaster of feelings, what a ride! Writer and director Pat Boonnitipat didn’t even try to reinvent the wheel. You know exactly what’s going to happen at the end; There is no miracle cure at the end (I’m looking at you, Queen of Tears), there is no „it’s always darkest before the dawn” ending, and there is no final twist (there is some kind of twist, but Choo whispered to me what it would be an hour before it happened and of course he was right. How does he do that every time?), but this is evidence of great storytelling in that you don’t need plot twists, flashy cinematography, full orchestration, a CGI dream sequence, or anything else to serve up a delicious plate of emotions.
The film’s greatest asset is its relatability
If you were born into an Asian family with ancestral roots that extend far and wide, you will sense familiarity with all the characters. Perhaps you will see manifestations of your own relatives and family members here: the patient daughter, the son who thinks problems that can be solved with money are not problems, the calculating daughter-in-law, the good-for-nothing son and the child with his eyes glued to the computer screen. The story is fictional but it feels real with its keen observation of family dynamics when the matriarch’s death is imminent and the vultures start circling. The grandmother is not stupid, she knows why she is the center of attention and even M is not spared when she tells him, „you are also sowing seeds in the hope of reaping them, right?” Credit goes to the actors who have brought their characters to life. I am surprised that this is Usha Seamkhum’s first acting role.
She is so natural without a single hint of artifice
Putthipong „Billkin” Assaratanakul is the perfect foil to Amah’s no-nonsense approach to life. You will follow his arc with fervor knowing that he will become wise to the ways of life and when that moment arrives it will be so subtle that you will know it is an accumulation of Amah’s many interactions with him. Although the plot is simple, I doubt anyone will find it boring. As it heads towards the inevitable finale, it will happen: your tears will flow, but know that every trickle will be well-earned, just like every outburst of laughter. Incidentally, this is currently the highest grossing film in Thailand and Indonesia, proving that it has resonated with many viewers.
My theory is that Amah already knows the outcome, but still wanted M to learn a hard life lesson
This is that rare film that Choo and I were still talking about over breakfast this morning, probably because we didn’t want the magic to dissipate, desperately trying to cling to the tendrils of a heartfelt story. You’d be surprised how we can still find bits of truth after a good night’s sleep, like a quick shot of a wheelchair-bound monk at the chemotherapy clinic, suggesting that the disease affects everyone, including devout religious people, or the scene where Amah visits his estranged brother to borrow money for a grave. School’s out.
