Plot
Investigating judge Iman grapples with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran
When his gun goes missing, he suspects his wife and daughters, imposing draconian measures that strain family ties as social norms crumble. Director Mohammad Rasouloff was originally scheduled to attend the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a jury member in the Un Certain Regard section. However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan following the deadly building collapse. On May 8, 2024, Rasouloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, in addition to flogging, a fine, and confiscation of his assets. On May 12, 2024, Rasouloff announced that he had successfully fled Iran and was staying in an undisclosed location in Europe.
Children think differently
On May 24, 2024, Rasouloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes, and on the red carpet, he showed photos of two of the film’s actors, Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh. Iman: Sana wants blue hair? Painted nails? What for? Najmeh: The world has changed.
Nor have his laws
Iman: The world has changed, but God has not changed. Najmeh: We have to teach them. Iman: We have always done this. Opening credits: „The Ficus Religiosa is a tree with an unusual life cycle. Its seeds, contained in bird droppings, fall on other trees.
Aerial roots sprout and grow to the ground
Then the branches wrap around the host tree and strangle it. Finally, the sacred fig stands on its own.” The Seed of the Sacred Fig was one of the most anticipated premieres at Cannes because of the story of its creation. A film shot in secret in Iran, which earned the director and actors prison sentences and floggings. So would the film live up to expectations despite its complicated production? What followed was not a film, it was a MOLOTOV COCKTAIL!
Women, life, liberty!
An incredibly courageous, powerful and moving story of morality, paranoia and resistance. The third act has been a topic of discussion, but it makes perfect sense to me in its symbolic context. If before the film Rasoulof and his team had already received a huge standing ovation due to the context of the film, the emotional ovation they received after the screening was even more enthusiastic, with Iranian director and Palme nominee Ali Abassi encouraging people to stand up and applaud. Unfortunately, The Frightened Fig Seed did not win the Palme d’Or in the end and had to settle for a small Special Jury Prize. But still, it would have been my choice for the main award, and it won my heart and the hearts of many others.
