The Maynards and their children lead a near perfect multi-millionaire family life. Amon is an avid hunter but doesn’t shoot animals because the family’s wealth allows them to live without consequences. It took 7 years to fund. Ayn Rand: It’s about who will stop me? We saw it at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Filmmakers Daniel Hoesl and Juliane Niemann definitely have an interesting satirical take on the wealthy class and while there are some good ideas, it feels underdeveloped and not as powerful as the film he creates. The production designs, camera work, and color presentation are superb and really beautiful as they help capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters. Hoesl and Niemann’s direction, while a bit chaotic, has a clear vision of the style and atmosphere it’s going for. A lot of the acting is solid, some of the childish acts are a bit weak. The narrative is a good concept but unfortunately feels heavy because it seems underdeveloped with some of the themes and characters. I don’t feel invested or interesting for an emotional connection. Like there were some good ideas that didn’t really live up to the potential they wanted. There are certain moments that are shocking, edgy and quite strange, and I understand where the filmmakers are coming from and their vision. But it doesn’t feel entirely earned and the style feels too much like something from Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. Overall it’s not bad because there are some moments that I appreciate. But it could have been stronger.
